KALEVIPOEG An Ancient Estonian Tale , compiled by Fr. R. Kreutzwald , translation with notes and afterword by Juri Kurman , Moorestown New Jersey Symposia Press 1982 , A collection of 62 fairy Tales by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882), a doctor by profession. He was born in Virumaa, the son of a serf shoemaker, and graduated from the medical faculty at Tartu University in 1833. The most outstanding work among his numerous writings is the national epic, `Kalevipoeg` (Kalev`s Son), which is based on popular myths and folk songs. Of great importance also is his `Old Estonian Fairy Tales` (Esti rahva ennemuistsed jutud, 1866). These two works are regarded as the cornerstone of Estonian folklore literature. However Kreutzwald was not a folklorist but a writer, and took many liberties, elaborating and altering, popular topics and tales of the times. Nearly 100 years ago, one folktale from Kreutzwald`s book, `The Powerful Crawfish and the Greedy Wife`, found it`s way to the Spanish reader via translations through French and German and translated into Spanish by Jose Martin, who gave his own version of it. In the course of time the genuine folk tales were forgotten and people came to take Kreutzwald`s fairy tales as authentic Estonian folk narratives. english language , hard cover , format 21 x 26,5 cm , XIV + 301 pages ,
